My Japanese Cooking Adventures and Other Stories

A Fruba Rant…

Posted in Magazines/Books by erinachan on October 19, 2008

Just finished Volume 7 of Fruits Basket, I know there are like 24 volumes out so far so I have a long way to go but I mean for 10 dollars a volume, no matter how bad I want to see what happens next, I just have to wait till my next paycheck.=( I seriously wonder sometimes how people pay for anime addictions, Im so grateful I’m only into a few! But yes, so like I said only finished with volume 7 and everything in the tv show has already basically been covered! why did they end the show so fast? It seems like it was extremely popular and the ending was ok but now that I know there is so much more story, it make me mad! I could have had more Fruits Basket to watch and they ended it there?!?! lameness…

Dorayaki Adventures…

Posted in Desserts, Japanese Food, Snacks by erinachan on October 19, 2008

So I had to fill a super order for the last couple days and it finally came down to the final item of dorayaki. It took many many trial runs over the past few weeks to get a consistent round shape to the dorayaki pancakes as well as a nice consistent brown color but I think after seriously probably at least 30 tries I have finally gotten it down! Behold perfectly browned dorayakis! I could almost cry! It goes to show if you just keep trying over and over and over at some point you’ll find success! woot!

I Got the New Gothic and Lolita!!!

Posted in Magazines/Books by erinachan on October 19, 2008

So for some reason it was really postponed and I was dreading that they would cancel it altogether, but I woke up this morning to find that my beyond awesome fiance had bought me the newest volume and left it for me on my desk to wake up to! So the picture here isnt the actual cover of Volume 3 in America I couldnt find a picture for it yet but I figured in case anybody hadn’t seen it before. Basically the Gothic and Lolita Bible is a hugely popular magazine in Japan that comes out quarterly in “Mook” (magazine/book) form. It lists all the biggest Lolita designers in Japan and the US, it shows the newest lines, has interviews with top Lolita and gothic bands and even patterns so you can make a lolita outfit yourself. Its 20 bucks which I know is a little steep but seriouly there is nothing out there like it.

This newest one is Halloween themed which I didnt even know was a Japanese holiday? but they definitly focused more on the gothic side for this volume. They have an interview with the head of H Naoto which is a Japanese gothic brand, personally im not a big fan of just because it looks like stuff I can buy at Hot Topic for a quarter of the price. There wer great pictures and articles but definitly the highlight of this issue was a pair of boots by Baby the Stars Shine Bright called the “Momoko” boot which I assume is named after the Baby The Stars Shine Bright (BTSSB for short) obsessed charcter in a popular Japanese movie called “Kamikaze Girls.” The boots were a beige suede with a faux fur lining and they laced up to the knee and had a big bow in the middle! I will be dreaming of these boots till at least after Christmas…
